Escalator

What Regulations apply?

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

What is a Regular Thorough Examination?

It is the periodic examination of an escalator to ensure that the escalator is functioning safely, that all necessary safety devices are in place and adequate, and that the emergency stop controls are easily identifiable and readily accessible.

How often does a Regular Thorough Examination have to be undertaken?

The frequency of testing is subject to risk assessment but it is normal to undertake one at least every 6 months.

What documentation should I receive on completion of a Regular Thorough Examination?

Upon completion of the exercise you should be presented with a report detailing which escalators have been tested. If necessary a list of remedial works will be included detailing any parts that need to be attended to in order to bring the escalator up to a satisfactory condition. In instances where the escalator is in a condition that may endanger a person’s health and safety then the engineer would advise that it should be taken out of service until such time that the identified defects have been rectified.

Who should undertake a Regular Thorough Examination?

This activity is specialised and only an experienced, qualified engineer should undertake the task.
